South Twin Lake Campground

South Twin Lake Campground sits on the western shore of South Twin Lake in the Deschutes National Forest. The 99 acres of South Twin Lake provide some good fishing for rainbow trout. Non-motorized boats are permitted in the lake. Adjacent to the campground, Twin Lakes Resort has boat rentals and a restaurant. Swimming is popular in its sheltered waters. Visitors are also close to Wickiup Reservoir and North Twin Lake.

South Twin Lake Campground is divided between South Twin Lake Campground and West South Twin Lake Campground. The two sections are on either side of the road from one another with one section next to South Twin Lake and the resort and the other, West South Twin Lake Campground, next to an arm of Wickiup Reservoir.

South Twin Lake Campground on South Twin Lake has 21 campsites for RVs, trailers, and tents arranged in a single loop. Campsites 1 - 10 are close to the lake's edge while the others are farther back among the trees. Mature conifers provide plenty of shade.

West South Twin Lake Campground on an arm of Wickiup Reservoir has 24 campsites for RVs, trailers, and tents. These sites are a little more isolated from one another than the section across the road. Several sites are for tents only.

South Twin Lake Campground Location: South Twin Lake Campground is on County Road 4260, 2 miles south of County Road 42. Most visitors approach on Highway 97, turning west at Wickiup Junction and traveling 11 miles on County Road 43 and then 4.6 miles west on Forest Road 42.

Attractions and Activities

  • Enjoy scenic strolls along the shore of Wickiup Reservoir, stopping at occasional sandy beach areas. Late in the year water levels drop and the lake is less attractive.
  • Fish for brown trout, kokanee and Coho salmon, and rainbow and brook trout. the best fishing is from a boat.
  • Rent boats from nearby Twin Lakes Resort. Besides row boats, they rent paddle boards, kayaks, and pedal boats.
  • Watch for a variety of birds from the dam. Look for Common Loons, ducks, Great Egrets, Baird's Sandpipers, Brown Pelicans, White-faced Ibis<, and many others.
  • Hike on the easy, 1.6-mile South Twin Lake Trail. Also make the short hike to North Twin Lake.
  • Make the short drive to Crane Prairie Reservoir.
  • Drive north to the Lava Lands Visitor Center in Bend.

Key South Twin Lake Campground Regulations

  1. Quiet Hours extend from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM
  2. Campfires may only be in campground provided fire pits.
  3. Help prevent the spread of invasive insects by obtaining firewood locally.
  4. Dogs must be kept on leash and attended at all times.
  5. Use of chainsaws is not permitted in the campground.
