Whitefish Horse Camp

Whitefish Horse Camp is on the western side of Crescent Lake in the Deschutes National Forest.

The campground is designated for those with horses. Visitors to Crescent Lake enjoy trail riding, boating, water skiing, fishing, swimming, hiking, and mountain biking. At the north end of the lake Crescent Lake Resort has boat rentals and a restaurant. A boat launch ramp is located in the day use section of nearby Spring Campground.

Whitefish Horse Camp offers 13 single campsites and 5 double sites for campers with horses. Campsites have either double or quadruple metal corrals. Campsites can accommodate an RV, horse trailer, and perhaps another vehicle. A manure collection site is provided.

Riders enjoy nearby trails such as the Metolius-Windigo Trail leading south toward Windigo Pass.

  • A trailhead located inside the campground accesses Diamond Peak Wilderness and Diamond Lake Trail.
  • Whitefish Trail leads up Whitefish Creek to beautiful views of Diamond Peak at Diamond View Lake. Continue on the trail to connect to Odell Lake.
  • A boat launch ramp is next to the campground.
  • Head to the lake for boating, water skiing, and fishing. Be cautious of brisk afternoon winds.
  • Fish for kokanee, lake trout, rainbow and brown trout.
  • Visit Crescent Lake Resort for boat and mountain bike rentals. Enjoy mountain biking in the area.
  • Drive to nearby Summit Lake.
  • Visit nearby Tandy Bay Picnic Area.




General Camping Information

Opening and closing dates of campgrounds are only estimates, usually dependent on weather conditions. Not all campsites can accommodate trailers or RVs of all lengths. Check carefully on the website when you make your reservation to be sure your vehicle will fit your campsite.

In order to prevent the spread of invasive insects, firewood from outside the area is not permitted.

Attractions and Activities

  • Spend days on the water boating, water skiing, fishing, kayaking, paddle boarding, or windsurfing.
  • Rent a boat from Crescent Lake Resort.
  • Ride the Whitefish Creek Trail to Diamond View Lake or take the Windy Lakes Trail.
  • Drive to nearby Odell Lake or Summit Lake.
  • Use the Willamette Pass Trailhead for the Pacific Crest Trail. Hike north to Lower Rosary Lake or south toward Diamond Peak.
  • Take the 2.5-mile loop Diamond Creek Falls Trail providing views of Lower Diamond Creek Falls and Salt Creek Canyon. Be more adventurous and continue on to the upper falls.

Key Whitefish Horse Camp Regulations

  1. Horse Campers must use Certified Weed-Seed-Free Hay.
  2. Campers are expected to shovel manure into feed sacks and place them next to the road for later collection.
  3. Campfires may only be in campground provided fire pits.
  4. Help prevent the spread of invasive insects by obtaining firewood locally.
  5. Dogs must be kept on leash and attended at all times.
  6. Use of chainsaws is not permitted in the campground.
  7. Quiet Hours extend from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM.
